about

Psychédélique Batería!

Either publicly or privately, drummers have ALWAYS wanted to make their own solo records. It's one of those musical desires that's bound to happen one way or another (ahem..Peter Criss). And sometimes drummers listening with no geographic restraint cannot help but express all influences possible to truly satisfy their most historic and multicultural muse. Psychédélique Batería! is a loud, proud and fearless transmission of melting pot debauchery from percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Christian Eric Beaulieu aka Atomicolor.

Recorded in San Francisco at El Studio with owner/engineer Phil Manley (Golden, Trans Am), the session began as a two hour block of improvisation with one of those hours spent dedicating the bass drum mic to a modular synth controlled by one Ryan Smith of SF electro duo Bathing. From the starting point the music was morphing itself into something resembling a Bruce Ditmas solo joint or even snippets of electronic period Miles Davis, admittedly played on the wrong speed. The tracks were then brought to Beaulieu's home studio Tape Hiss Closet, where he began a "Play the piano drunk like a percussion instrument till the fingers begin to bleed a bit" Bukowski style approach to his overdubs, first replacing booze with coffee, then beating on a Roland MC303, Micro Korg, Congas, shakers and whatever else he could find at home.

Psychédélique Batería! was originally inspired as a sort of tribute to the way the immortal session master Hal Blaine of the Wrecking Crew realized a limitless approach to the concept of a solo drum record with his Psychedelic Percussions release in 67.

As lone, deep hip hop beats crossfade into avant-garde waves of controlled chaos willingly crashing into Latin, African, weirded out and out of place rock rhythms and even a single no wave guitar scratch, it becomes apparent that this "drums record" is willing itself into more being, more resonance and more celebration than a studious drums record. It's no wonder scientists study the brain activity of our worldly psychedelic percussionists. These sound researchers seemed to have tapped into the greater chase of experiencing those precious, enlightened moments when the universe briefly decides to remind us that we should immediately stop all this unnecessary thinking and start dancing our asses off.
